Galapágos sea lion (Zalophus wollebaeki)
There is a large degree of sexual dimorphism (differences between the sexes apart from genitalia) in sea lions. Males weigh up to 250kg while females reach only 100kg. There are approximately 16,000 individuals throughout the archipelago, a number which has decreased over last decade.
Males establish territories which are savagely defended from rivals and interlopers, forcing the unsuccessful bulls to leave the area and set up bachelor colonies away from the female haul-outs.
Giant Tortoise (Geochelone elephantopus)
To think of Galapágos is to think of tortoises. Indeed, the very name Galapágos is derived from an old Spanish word referring to their saddle-like shape. They are undoubtedly the archipelago's most celebrated animals, and it is a shame that their story is a sad one. They have suffered badly at the hands of humans and many races would no longer be around but for recent intervention.
Today there are only 11 Galapágos tortoise subspieces surviving, one of which, Geochelone elephantopus abingdon from Pinta, is represented by a single individual now living in captivity, fondly named 'Lonesome George'.
